Goa, April 7 -- Sri Lanka released 14 Indian fishermen on Sunday as a special gesture, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged for a "humane approach" in resolving the long-standing issue. The fishermen's release came after discussions between Prime Minister Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday, where the issue of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody was a major topic.
The fishermen issue has been a contentious point in India-Sri Lanka relations, with frequent incidents in the past where Sri Lankan Navy personnel allegedly used force against Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait, a narrow waterway that separates Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka.
