Goa, June 30 -- Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Monday described the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as India's first serious attempt to decolonize its education system, asserting that it will help keep future generations connected to their cultural roots.

Speaking at the 41st Foundation Day celebrations of Goa University, Arlekar emphasized that education must be anchored in local context and values.

"Our education system keeps us rooted to our soil. NEP 2020 is the first serious attempt to decolonize our education," he said.

The Governor stressed the importance of research as a core function of any higher education institution. "Where there is no research, it cannot be called a university," he remarked.
