Goa, Oct. 31 -- The President of India has approved the appointment of Justice Surya Kant, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will assume office on November 24, 2025, following the retirement of Chief Justice BR Gavai on November 23.

The announcement was confirmed by Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who posted on social media, "In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025."
