Goa, Nov. 28 -- Ramponkars and trawler owners across Goa, under the banner of Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE), have strongly criticised the Fisheries Director and Department for allowing non-Goan trawlers to operate illegally in Goan waters. They allege that boats from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat are entering the state in large numbers, destroying Goan fishermen's nets and leaving them with almost no catch. GRE secretary Olencio Simoes said the department had earlier promised strict action in an affidavit to the court, but nothing has been done, amounting to contempt. He demanded hefty fines and immediate action against all illegal trawlers operating in Goa.
