Goa, Oct. 19 -- Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday criticised the government's expenditure on Diwali celebrations, drawing comparisons with Christmas festivities worldwide. He suggested that India could "learn" from how cities celebrate Christmas, questioning the need to spend heavily on lamps and candles.

"I will give one suggestion in the name of Lord Ram. Across the world, cities remain illuminated during Christmas for months. Why do we need to spend so much on lamps?" Yadav said during a public address. He added that the current government should be removed and promised that his party would ensure "more beautiful lights."
