Goa, Nov. 16 -- India suffered disappointing home defeat within a year, losing the first Test to South Africa by 30 runs after failing to chase a 124-run target on Day 3 at the Eden Gardens. A vital 44-run stand between Temba Bavuma and Corbin Bosch on a pitch with uneven bounce helped the visitors set a challenging total, with Bavuma remaining unbeaten on 55. India began the chase a batter short as captain Shubman Gill was ruled out with a neck spasm, and early wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul deepened the collapse. Spinners Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj dismantled the middle and lower order, securing South Africa's first Test win in India in 15 years and extending India's worrying home chasing trend.
