India, June 29 -- Post-theatrical rights remain a distant dream for a lot of Kannada films. In the last couple of years, only about a fifth or less of the total number of movies in theatres managed to make it to TV or OTT and the trend continues in 2025 as well. Amazon Prime Video and Sun NXT are the two platforms that have picked up most of the films that are streaming now, while Z5 took only 1. The buzz in industry circles is that JioHotstar has begun acquiring Kannada films but with JioCinema and Hotstar merger kinks still being ironed out, it will be a while before these movies make it to the platform.
