BARA, April 9 -- A Dalit settlement in Hardiya of Bara district has been hit hard by a scarcity of drinking water after hand pumps belonging to 64 families were destroyed in the rainstorm of March 31.

People living in the plains depend entirely on hand pumps for drinking purpose, doing daily household chores and for irrigation.

Following the rainstorm, there is only one hand pump in working order at the community. Families living in the area are having a hard time getting water from the only source, and have been forced to rely on donors for water.

The locals complain of not getting enough water for cooking, cleaning and feeding their cattle.
