Kathmandu/tanahun, Jan. 29 -- Martyrs' Day was observed nationwide today, with people across the country paying heartfelt tributes to those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of democracy.
The day, marked on Magh 16 in the Nepali lunar calendar, honours the brave martyrs who fought for people's rights and freedoms during various movements throughout Nepal's history. In particular, the country remembers Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand, and Gangalal Shrestha, who were executed by the autocratic Rana regime for their efforts to bring about democratic change 84 years ago. These four iconic figures are considered the pillars of people's struggle for democratic rights.
