Biratnagar, Feb. 2 -- Clashes broke out between protesters and police in Damak, Jhapa, on Sunday during a demonstration against the proposed cable car project in Pathibhara of Taplejung district. The two-day strike called by the Mukkumlung conservation struggle committee led to violent confrontations between the demonstrators and the police. The committee has enforced general strike in nine districts of Arun east on Sunday and Monday.
According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated when protesters began hurling stones at the police that prompted the security personnel to respond with tear gas.
