Srinagar, Dec. 3 -- An alert has been sounded in Kashmir in the wake of inputs that the Islamic State based in Syria could be behind the attack on traffic cop in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Sources said the government agencies have inputs that the Islamic State could be trying to create its base in Kashmir, a development which has set the alarm bells ringing. On December 1, the unarmed traffic cop was fired from point blank range on the fateful evening in Gojwara area of old City when he was manning vehicular movement in the area. The wounded cop is undergoing treatment. Officials said it was first such attack in Kashmir in the recent years where a traffic policeman had been attacked.
