Jammu, Jan. 6 -- The year 2026 is expected to usher in significant financial relief for Central government employees and pensioners, with strong indications that revised pay scales under the Eighth Pay Commission will come into effect from January 1, 2026.

The government approved the constitution of the 8th Pay Commission in November 2025, appointing former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as its chairperson. While the Commission's recommendations may take up to 18 months to be finalised, they are expected to be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2026, a move that would entitle employees and pensioners to arrears.
