India, Aug. 29 -- The rupee slipped below the 88-mark for the first time, closing at a record low of 88.19 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, down 61 paise amid escalating Indo-US trade tensions.

According to forex traders, the domestic currency faced sustained pressure from steep US tariffs, persistent foreign fund outflows, and strong month-end dollar demand.

Additionally, weak domestic equities further weighed on market sentiment.
