India, July 17 -- The rupee appreciated by 12 paise to 85.80 against the US dollar in early Thursday trade, supported by a decline in global crude oil prices and optimism surrounding progress in the ongoing India-US trade negotiations.

Forex traders noted that a stronger US dollar against major global currencies and continued FII outflows limited further appreciation in the local currency.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened slightly weaker at 85.93 but soon rebounded to 85.80, marking a 12-paise gain from its previous close.
