India, Dec. 12 -- The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a budget of Rs 11,718.24 crore to conduct the Census of India 2027, which will be the country's first fully digital census and one of the largest administrative exercises in the world.
According to the government, the census will be carried out in two phases:
Houselisting & Housing Census from April to September 2026,
Population Enumeration in February 2027.
For Ladakh and snow-bound areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the Population Enumeration will be held earlier in September 2026.
