India, March 28 -- The Union Cabinet has approved a 2 percentage point hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners, effective from January 1, 2025.

This decision will benefit around 1.15 crore employees and pensioners. The DA and DR rates will increase from the current 53% of basic pay or pension to 55%, aiming to offset the impact of rising prices.

According to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the move will result in an additional financial burden of ?6,614.04 crore annually on the exchequer.
