Pakistan, Aug. 11 -- More than half of India's exports to the United States - around 55% - are now subject to a steep 50% tariff, following fresh trade restrictions imposed by US President Donald Trump. The move has sharply escalated tensions between the two countries and raised alarms among exporters and economists in New Delhi.

According to India's junior finance minister Pankaj Chaudhary, the 55% figure includes a wide range of merchandise exports, from textiles and electronics to chemicals and auto parts. The new estimate takes into account the recent 25% tariff hike, which was added to existing duties as a punitive response to India's continued imports of Russian oil.
