Pakistan, July 4 -- Due to continuous heavy rainfall in northern areas, authorities have decided to open the spillways of Tarbela Dam to manage the rapidly increasing water levels. This move aims to prevent pressure build-up and potential structural risk.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that opening the spillways could raise the Indus River's water flow to between 260,000 and 270,000 cusecs. This may lead to flooding in low-lying areas along the riverbanks.
As a result, residents living near spillway routes have been advised to remain alert. Warnings have been issued particularly for riverbank communities in Nowshera, Swabi, and Haripur, where the risk of flooding is considered higher.
