The ongoing sugar crisis in Pakistan is another example of government inaction creating problems for ordinary people. Instead of solving the root causes, the government has chosen to crack down on retailers and shopkeepers, punishing those who are also suffering from the shortage. Arresting grocery store owners and shutting down their shops will not bring sugar back to the shelves.
Frustration is already running high among traders and consumers as sugar scarcity makes life harder. Traders' association has openly criticised this failed approach. Their leaders say that markets in Islamabad would remain closed indefinitely because of supply shortages and unreasonable pricing.
