Pakistan, Oct. 18 -- Portugal's parliament approved a bill banning face veils like burqas and niqabs in most public spaces. The bill targets veils worn for gender or religious reasons, especially by Muslim women. It proposes fines between 200 and 4,000 euros for violators. Those forcing others to wear face veils could face up to three years in prison. However, face veils remain allowed on planes, in places of worship, and diplomatic facilities.

The bill, proposed by the far-right Chega party, now goes to the parliamentary committee on constitutional affairs. The committee will review whether the bill fits Portugal's constitution.
