Pakistan, July 28 -- GOALPARA, INDIA - Thousands of Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam have been evicted from their homes as Indian authorities launch a large-scale crackdown ahead of upcoming state elections. Entire families are now living under tarpaulin shelters after their homes were bulldozed, accused of illegally occupying government land.
The latest eviction drive, led by Assam's BJP government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has mainly targeted Muslims. Officials claim they are removing "illegal infiltrators" from Bangladesh, even though many of the evicted were born in India and have lived in Assam for decades.
