Pakistan, July 15 -- What happened in Daska was not new, but it was still alarming. A mob, reportedly incited by religious hardliners, attacked an Ahmadi place of worship and clashed with police officers trying to maintain order. Stones were thrown, property was damaged, and officers were injured. Yet, in a country where such attacks often end in silence or apology, this time the police stood firm. They arrested 51 individuals and booked over 140 under anti-terrorism charges. That, in itself, was significant.

The courage shown by the police deserves more than passing acknowledgement. In a climate where upholding the law can cost one's reputation, or worse, restraint in the face of rage is an act of moral discipline.
