Pakistan, June 15 -- ISLAMABAD - Lawmakers from across party lines voiced strong concerns during the National Assembly's budget debate on Saturday, calling for meaningful tax relief for the public and opposing aggressive tax enforcement measures. While some appreciated key incentives, many demanded greater fairness and economic balance in the 2025-26 federal budget.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said Pakistan loses nearly Rs300 billion annually in tobacco sector tax evasion, adding that sectors like real estate, steel, and tyres also escape taxation. He stressed improving tax collection could reduce the country's reliance on foreign loans and demanded action against corrupt networks benefiting from public resources.
