KARACHI - Dairy farmers have demanded an immediate increase of Rs50 per litre in milk prices, citing massive losses caused by recent floods.
Speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, leaders of the Dairy Farmers Association said that the rates of essential items used in the dairy industry had risen by nearly 30 per cent. They warned that if the situation persisted, there was a serious risk of animals starving to death.
The association claimed that Karachi's dairy sector is already suffering losses of Rs3 billion daily, with more than one million animals housed in various colonies and nearly 5 million litres of milk supplied to the city every day.
