It is just on paper that inflation numbers of Pakistan for August have a brief sigh of relief. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the main measure of inflation, slowed to 3pc year-on-year, down from 4.1pc in July.

On the surface, this looks like good news for households already struggling with rising power and grocery costs. But experts warn this relief may be short-lived. Weeks of devastating floods have damaged crops, disrupted supplies, and pushed up the prices of essentials like tomatoes, onions, and rice.
