Pakistan, Dec. 21 -- The seventeenth President of the United States, Andrew Johnson, was the first US President in history to face impeachment. Johnson, who took office in April 1865 was impeached in March 1868 for high crimes and misdemeanour. He had violated the Tenure of Office Act, which was passed in 1867 by Congress. Under this Act, the powers of the US President were restricted to remove certain office-holders with the Senate's approval.

Bill Clinton, the 42nd US President, was the second US President to be impeached. Clinton was impeached on December 19, 1998, on grounds of perjury and obstruction of justice.
