A deadly cholera outbreak has killed 68 Sudanese refugees in Chad since late July, health officials confirmed, warning that the number of cases continues to rise at an alarming pace.

The epidemic began in Dougui refugee camp, where overcrowded conditions and a lack of clean water have created fertile ground for the spread of the waterborne disease, officials further explained on Tuesday.

Since the first case was identified, the Chadian health ministry reported a total of 1,016 infections, adding that poor healthcare facilities are worsening the crisis inside the refugee camps.
