Sri Lanka, April 17 -- A 16-year-old school student tragically lost his life after falling from a greasy pole while assisting with preparations for an Avurudu festival in Elpitiya today (17).

The incident occurred at the playground near the Siriwijayaramaya Temple in Amugoda, Pitigala, where arrangements were underway for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations.

According to Pitigala Police, the student fell from a 40-foot tall greasy pole and later died after being admitted to the Elpitiya Base Hospital.

The victim had recently sat for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination and was awaiting his results.
