DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 20 -- MUHIMBILI National Hospital (MNH) envisages becoming the first public health facility in the country to offer in vitro fertilisation (IVF) service, giving new hopes to needy patients.

Experts describe IVF as a process where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body, in vitro.

The process involves monitoring and stimulating a woman's ovulatory process, removing the ovum or ova from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in liquid in a laboratory.

MNH Executive Director Professor Lawrence Museru told reporters in Dar es Salaam that the hospital was in important final preparations, including procurement and installation of equipment to allow the service commencement in the next two months.
