MWANZA, Nov. 24 -- THE Ilemela District Court today released 76 people who had been charged with treason in connection with violence that followed the oppositions reaction to Tanzanias October 29, 2025 General Election process.

Principal Resident Magistrates Pela Kiama and Christian Mwalimu, sitting in separate chambers, discharged 57 and 19 accused persons respectively after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) filed nolle prosequi notices in their favour.

A nolle prosequi is a legal power granted to the DPP under Section 91(1) of the Criminal Procedure Act, allowing the state to halt criminal proceedings at any stage before judgment.
