Sri Lanka, Feb. 17 -- The Free Elephant Sanctuary, an enclosure to house adult male elephants during the rutting or musth period, was opened yesterday at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

The opening also coincided with the opening of the Orphanage 51 years ago. The Sanctuary will be a safe space for elephants who experience the rutting or musth phase, usually when they reach sexual maturity and have to be managed safely. It will be maintained in line with modern zoological and animal welfare concepts. One male elephant was already inducted to the Sanctuary yesterday.
