Sri Lanka, July 19 -- The sluice gates of the Wimalasurendra Reservoir were opened this morning (19) after heavy rainfall in its catchment areas caused the reservoir to overflow, the Nuwara Eliya Disaster Management Centre announced.

Authorities have issued a warning that the water level of the Kelani River may rise due to the overflow from the reservoir.

Meanwhile, engineers responsible for managing the reservoir system reported that continuous rainfall on the western slopes of the central hills has brought the Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs close to spill level.
