Sri lanka, Oct. 2 -- On the night of October 1, officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau arrested two airline passengers - a 26-year-old Sri Lankan businessman from Ratnapura and a 23-year-old Indian national - for attempting to smuggle a large stock of foreign-manufactured cigarettes valued at Rs. 10.41 million into the country through Katunayake International Airport.
The suspects had arrived from Dubai on Emirates Airlines flight EK-648 around 7:20 p.m. and were found to have concealed 347 cartons containing 69,400 cigarettes inside six suitcases.
Both suspects were released on police bail and are scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate's Court on October 3 for further investigations.
