Srilanka, June 5 -- A major train collision was narrowly avoided earlier today on Sri Lanka's coastal railway line due to a serious malfunction in the color light signaling system between Panadura and Moratuwa.

A slow train traveling from Panadura to Colombo Fort was moving forward after receiving a green signal, unaware that another train was already operating on the same track and in the same direction within the same section.

Chandana Wiyanduwa, representing the Locomotive Operating Engineers Union, said the near-miss was caused by a critical fault in the signaling system. "It was only the attentiveness and expertise of the engine driver that prevented a tragic accident," he stated.
