Sri Lanka, Oct. 6 -- Today marks Vap Poya Day, a significant day in the Buddhist calendar. Historical records in the Sasana note that on this day, the Buddha, who had ascended to the Tathagata heaven to spend the seventh rainy season, returned to Sankassapura in India, arriving in a grand procession.

The day also holds importance for monks, as it marks the conclusion of the three-month pre-rain and rainy season retreats, traditionally observed with special ceremonies.
