Sri Lanka, Jan. 12 -- The Department of Motor Transport (DMT) has announced that the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is now mandatory when transferring ownership of vehicles.
Previously, the TIN was required only for the registration of new vehicles. However, effective January 5, 2026, the TIN must also be provided when ownership of registered vehicles is transferred.
According to Commissioner General Kamal Amarasinghe, except for motorcycles, hand tractors, tractors, and three-wheelers, the National Identity Card (NIC) number and the TIN number of the new owner must be entered into the DMT's data system during the transfer process.
