Srilanka, June 16 -- A tense atmosphere has gripped the Colombo Municipal Council as a dispute erupted over the voting procedure for electing the new Mayor.

The opposition, led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has nominated Mohamed Riza Saruk for the post, while the National Jana Balawegaya (NPP) has nominated Wrai Kelley Balthasar.

In accordance with her powers, the Municipal Commissioner proposed a secret ballot to elect the Mayor. However, the opposition is demanding an open vote, strongly objecting to the decision.

As the session continues, tensions remain high within the council chamber, with members from both sides standing firm on their positions.
