Sri lanka, Oct. 2 -- Teachers and principals will resign from school disciplinary committees if Parliament passes the proposed bill banning the punishment of students, warned Venerable Ulapane Sumangala Thero, President of the Education Professionals' Association, during a press briefing held on September 30.

The Thero said that if teachers and principals withdraw from disciplinary committees, all ongoing disciplinary investigations in schools would be undermined due to inactivity. He added that the new bill also makes headmasters and student prefects liable, which would lead to prefect boards being suspended and students removed from disciplinary duties in protest.
