Sri Lanka, Oct. 31 -- The Supreme Court yesterday fixed for support the Fundamental Rights petition filed by Minister Sunil Handunnetti, seeking an order to recover Rs.15.9 billion allegedly lost to the state through the controversial 2020 Sugar import fraud.

The petition, which Handunnetti filed while in opposition, calls for legal action against those responsible for the alleged financial irregularities that occurred during the reduction of sugar import taxes in 2020.

A three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Justice Kumudini Wickremasinghe and Justice Mahinda Samayawardhana fixed the petition for support on January 19, 2026.
