Srilanka, April 7 -- A speeding car struck three young children playing near their home claiming the life of a five-year-old girl, while two other children were left seriously injured.

The driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle, and investigations are underway to apprehend him, police said. The incident occurred on Saturday (5) in Mahabage area. Police reports indicate that the car's driver had been chasing a motorcycle at the time of the accident.

The vehicle veered into the children, eventually crashing into a concrete post. The driver had escaped on foot leaving behind the car. The deceased girl is a five-year-old resident of Weligama.
