Srilanka, June 16 -- The secret ballot to elect the next Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council is currently in progress, overseen by Western Province Local Government Commissioner Sarangika Jayasundara.

The government has nominated Vrai Kelley Balthasar from the National People's Power (NPP) as its candidate for the mayoral post.

Meanwhile, the opposition, led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has put forward Risa Saruk of the Samagi People's Power as their nominee.

The election is taking place in a politically charged atmosphere, with debates earlier surfacing over the use of a secret ballot.
