Sri Lanka, Sept. 16 -- A programme to provide scholarships to schoolchildren from economically disadvantaged families in the Mahaiyawa area, funded by the President's Fund, was held at the Kandy District Secretariat with Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne in attendance on Sunday (14).

During a field inspection carried out on May 31 by officials of the President's Fund, it was observed that implementing development programmes to improve the living standards of the people in the Purnawatta West Grama Niladhari Division of Mahaiyawa would be appropriate. As one such step, a scholarship scheme for schoolchildren was launched.

Under the first phase of this initiative, scholarships were awarded to 28 students.
