Sri Lanka, Jan. 21 -- The four-year prison sentence imposed on Opposition Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake representing the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) for Contempt of Court continues to cause ripples in political circles with the Opposition this week clamouring for Ramanayake's return to Parliament.

Last week Ramanayake was imprisoned by the Supreme Court for making derogatory remarks about the Sri Lankan Judiciary in August 2017. A three-judge bench comprising of Justices Sisira de Abrew, Vijith Malalgoda, and Preethi Padman Surasena unanimously issued the verdict on January 12.

Following the decision, Ramanayake was led away to the Correctional Centre in Pallansena for quarantine purposes. While being taken away by prison officials...
