Srilanka, April 23 -- A violent riot broke out at Matara Prison around 8:00 PM on April 22, following protests over the transfer of two inmates to Angunakolapelessa Prison. As tensions escalated, inmates in the high-security wing began pelting stones at prison officers, prompting officials to fire warning shots into the air in an attempt to regain control.
Despite initial efforts to contain the unrest, the situation flared up again around midnight, with inmates damaging prison property. Police officers on site responded by firing tear gas and additional warning shots.
According to hospital sources, three prison officers were injured in the violence and admitted to Matara General Hospital.
