Sri Lanka, March 3 -- The Railways Department has introduced additional speed limits and revised train schedules to prevent nighttime collisions between trains and wild elephants. These measures, both short-term and long-term, aim to protect wildlife while ensuring passenger safety.

As a key step, speed limits will be reduced in areas where wild elephants are frequently sighted. Additionally, train departure times have been adjusted to minimize operations during peak elephant movement hours.

The revised schedules will be implemented from March 7, covering sections from Palugaswewa to Hingurakgoda on the Batticaloa line, as well as Welikanda to Poonani and Galoya Junction to Kantale on the Trincomalee line.
