Srilanka, June 27 -- The Committee on Public Finance has approved new import regulations under the Import and Export (Control) Act No. 1 of 1969, as published in Extraordinary Gazette No. 2437/04 dated 19 May 2025 and tabled in Parliament on 17 June 2025.

The approval comes in response to a shortage of salt in the local market. The newly approved regulations permit the import of raw non-iodized salt as well as iodized edible salt-both in powdered and crystal forms-for household and industrial use.

These matters were discussed at the committee meeting held on 24 June 2025 in Parliament, chaired by Dr. Harsha de Silva, MP.
