Sri Lanka, Sept. 19 -- A protest is currently underway in front of the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, demanding an immediate halt to the controversial wind power project in Mannar. Demonstrators, led by the Mannar Citizens' Committee Campaign for the People's Council Environmental Center, are voicing strong opposition to what they describe as "mineral theft" and a destructive project that threatens to erase Mannar Island from Sri Lanka's map.
Protesters say the wind farm poses severe environmental risks, damages the island's unique ecosystem, and threatens the livelihoods of fishing and farming communities. They also allege that ongoing mineral sand excavation is further worsening the destruction of the coastal environment.
