Srilanka, May 21 -- Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced in Parliament today (21) that Sri Lanka is facing a shortage of 40,000 teachers nationwide. The government aims to recruit at least a portion of these vacancies by the end of this year.Sri Lankan tourism
She made this statement while responding to a question raised by Opposition MP Mujibur Rahman.
Detailing the shortages, the Prime Minister revealed that government schools currently have:
4,240 Sinhala medium and 2,827 Tamil medium teacher vacancies from Grades 1 to 5
11,274 Sinhala medium and 6,121 Tamil medium teacher vacancies from Grades 6 to 11
In the Western Province alone, there are over 3,300 teacher vacancies, highlighting the urgency of the issue.
