Srilanka, Feb. 20 -- In 2024, a total of 184,926 individuals sought medical treatment for dog bites, as revealed by Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, in Parliament on February 20. The Gampaha district recorded the highest number of cases.
The government spends between Rs. 850 million to one billion annually on treating dog bite victims. Dr. Jayatissa shared district-specific data, noting that in Trincomalee alone, 4,035 people were bitten by dogs last year. Of these, 3,275 incidents were caused by stray dogs, while 759 involved domestic dogs.
