Sri Lanka, July 19 -- Police report that more than 1,000 phone calls have been received from individuals expressing a desire to adopt a newborn baby girl who was found abandoned under a tree in a paddy field in Paragahadeniya, Mawathagama.
Many of the adoption inquiries came from Sri Lankans residing overseas, including in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Italy. Authorities have informed all interested individuals about the legal procedures required for adoption.
The identity of the infant's mother remains unknown, and investigations are underway to locate her.
